Happy Birthday to me!

I started celebrating about a week ago.  I’m 70 today.

Maybe the early start was just an excuse to abuse my body… more.  Had a cigar and an extra glass of wine last night, maybe two.  Or maybe it’s because I’ve begun to think about the number of birthdays yet ahead.  No sense wasting time.

Harry was 70 in March.  I remember his e-mail on that auspicious day… “I’ve entered my seventh decade.  Who’da thunk it.”  After counting on my fingers, I wrote “Harry, you’ve actually finished your seventh decade and started on your eighth…how does that make you feel?”

I stayed in bed a little bit longer this morning.  Sweetie was there too.  Nice.  I’d be there yet except for the first of a couple of phone calls from friends announcing my advancing age to the tune of Happy Birthday.

My niece, Sharon, sent me a YouTube link to some guy singing a song about getting older.  It’s been viewed nearly 4 million times.  I’m sure she didn’t know it was my birthday but the song sure fit.  I grinned, related to it and felt strangely happy.

As my old Rabbi used to say “Whenever I look in the mirror, I see a young man.”  And, except for the occasional unexplained body aches, and my increasing inability to rise gracefully from a sitting position, I feel pretty good.

It’s a beautiful day in the Upper Ojai.

Happy birthday, me.

ימי־שנותינו בהם שבעים שנה ואם בגבורת ׀ שמונים שנה ורהבם עמל ואון כי־גז חיש ונעפה׃

This is the bible giving you three score plus ten – and if you are strong at least another ten.

    The days of our years are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty years;

    Happy Birthday youngster.

I always remember the date in advance with a constant reminder to call that person on the correct date and, of course, it comes and goes and then I remember again. But, in this case, it did not go yet, so a very happy and more importantly, healthy year and many more to come. I also remember how old you are because you are 8 months older than I.
It is rainy here, but my beautiful, late Mom, used to say that rain on a special day was good luck, so I guess it’s a beautiful day here, too.

Forgive my spelling Fred, my fingers no longer work very good, something you have to look forward too at 75. I think the cut off age is 74, fred, everything go to (H) one at a time after 74. Love YA.

Gencie and I send our very best on this milestone day, Fred. A few thoughts on your big day:

“The hardest years in life are those between ten and seventy.” -Helen Hayes

“Inside every older person is a younger person – wondering what the hell happened.” -Cora Harvey Armstrong

And, finally:”Everyone is the age of their heart”

Happy birthday to a wise, old soul, and an eternally young heart.

I’ll happily add my best wishes to you on this momentous day. What I notice now that Phil is also 70 is that 70 doesn’t seem so old anymore. Phil also tells me of one Ojai Retired Men’s Club member who turned 70 recently and is celebrating by doing a 70 mile bike ride on Memorial Day. Apparently he does that every year, one mile for each year. So what will 100 be like?? ( Despite what I said I also found myself, on Phil’s birthday, telling everyone that he is much OLDER than I!)
    Happy Birthday Fred!

Happy Birthday Fred! I will always think of you as my cool cousin Freddy because my father repeatedly said, “that Freddy — he’s too young to have an air conditioned car.” Much love to you and Ila, ~Sally

Ah, it seems like yesterday we celebrated your …65th…I guess it must have been…..at my all time favorite restaurant, Boccalli’s.
Could 5 years really have flown past so quickly? I think it was only 3, and you’re just adding a couple to make us think how could someone who looks so young be 70!

Wishing you a healthy, happy and prosperous 8th decade. And don’t rush this one so much! Live all 10 years in order and at your leisure.
    love,
    the other Maureen
